You’re officially over chasing your roots every four weeks. We get it! But, you’ve started noticing more silver popping up around your face, and you’re not ready to go completely gray, but you’re also kinda done pretending those silver strands aren’t there. That is exactly why our gray blending service is for! So, if you’ve been wondering whether or not you’re a good candidate for gray blending, we have some opinions about how to decide!

We have an entire guide breaking down color blending for gray hair, so we won’t make you read the same thing twice.
Gray blending works with your natural silver rather than trying to completely cover every strand. Your stylist may use highlights, lowlights, glosses, toners, root softening, or other customized color techniques to make the transition between your natural gray and the rest of your hair feel softer and more intentional.
For starters, we get this question all the time and instead of sharing a list of the qualifications for gray blending, let’s just pretend you’re in our chair as we go through the types of questions we’re asking to help our clients decide if gray blending is a great service for their hair goals.

If you’re okay with seeing some gray peeking through, gray blending may be a great option for you because gray blending isn’t meant to make every silver strand disappear. If your goal is zero visible gray, traditional gray coverage may still make more sense for you. JUNE’s gray coverage service uses permanent color for a more consistent tone, while gray blending intentionally leaves some natural silver visible and works it into the overall color.
If you feel like you JUST left the salon and suddenly that little line of regrowth is back again… we know that can get frustrating over time. Traditional gray coverage often means coming back around every four to six weeks because the contrast between permanent color and new silver growth becomes noticeable fairly quickly. But gray blending is designed for a softer grow-out, which can allow some clients to stretch their color appointments further apart. So, IF you are looking for a more low-maintenance solution for taming your gray’s, gray blending might be a good option to consider.
If you love hair with movement, variation, and a lived-in finish rather than one solid shade, this is where gray blending can get really pretty.
Our team of stylists use strategic highlights and lowlights that can be used to connect your existing color with the silver already growing through it. Glossing or toning may also help pull everything together. And then the addition of root softening can make the transition even less obvious.
As you can see, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach for gray blending because it is all dependent on your existing color history, current graying, and how much you want to cover/blend.

As we mentioned above, your overall hair goals are an important decision-maker. Some common goals that we hear is that you want to fully transition into your natural silver over time, maybe you still want to feel brunette, just without the harsh gray regrowth. Maybe you want to stay blonde and let your natural silver become part of the overall dimension.
Or maybe your actual goal is simply to stop planning your entire calendar around your roots. Whatever the situation is, we’ll take all of this into consideration when deciding on a transition/color plan.
At JUNE Hair Co. it is a priority for our stylists to ensure that we are not ever causing MORE damage to your hair. Depending on your starting point, your gray-blending plan may involve lightening portions of the hair. And if your hair is already fragile or has a complicated color history, your stylist may recommend taking things slower than you originally pictured.
Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the look that you want. It just means that we may need a few sessions to get there to help keep your hair healthy and strong during the transition.
For example, some guests can make a noticeable shift in one session. Others need multiple appointments to gradually transition while protecting the health of their hair. Dark artificial color in particular can make the process slower.
We care just as much about what has already happened to your hair as what you want to do next. Virgin hair, years of permanent gray coverage, old highlights, dark artificial color, previous lightener—all of it gives your stylist information.
Your color history doesn’t necessarily mean gray blending is off the table. It helps determine what the plan needs to be and how quickly we can realistically get there.
That’s why reviewing your previous color is part of JUNE’s existing gray-blending process before creating dimension or softening the grow-out.

There are also situations where traditional gray coverage may simply fit your goals better.
If you want absolutely no visible silver, prefer one rich and uniform hair color, or genuinely don’t mind coming into the salon regularly for root maintenance, full coverage is still a completely valid option.
And if your dream gray-blending result would require more from your hair than it can safely handle right now, we may recommend adjusting the plan or taking a more gradual approach.

If you’re local to the Oceanside community, make an appointment and we’ll take a look at where your silver is coming in, what color is already on your hair, the condition of your hair, how much maintenance you realistically want, and where you’d eventually like your color to go.
From there, we can talk about whether gray blending makes sense for you and what getting there could actually look like.
